An Astounding Art - Tae kwon do

by Kalynn Amadio

When you think of mortal combat, does the word art come to mind?

Of course not.

Martial arts are not only hard. They have an internal part, the softer part that develops roots in philosophical ideals often unknown to non martial artists. The fact that martial arts have two sides is an important reason why instructing children in the martial arts is a great idea.

Many parents worry that teaching their kids martial arts will make them more aggressive and more likely to fight. The opposite is actually true. And there is a fundamental reason why.

Many martial artists refer to their training in two parts. Observe the ancient Chinese symbol of yin/yang which visually tells a tale of everything having an opposite, like hot and cold, earth and heavens, fire and water.

What is referred to as external martial arts is what most people are familiar with. This is the action you enjoy on the movie screen and on television. It’s the sometimes violent or even deadly, hard hitting power that one can learn to use to overcome an opponent. But remember, that what you see on the screen is only what Hollywood deems glamorous.

A martial art is never, never taught only at its external, physical root. As with the yin-yang, the martial arts are surrounded by philosophical underpinnings of peace and harmony that form the internal, mental root. Specifically, internal martial arts study embraces the philosophy of Consequentialism or “right action.”

All actions cause reactions or consequences. The theory of “right action” is the practice of choosing to take the highest road and thereby causing the most moral results. Because this does not always come naturally to humans, martial artists believe they must actively practice choosing the the most moral course which in turn brings the best outcome for more people.

Nearly all martial arts share origins in Asian nations where Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism began. It’s not surprising that martial arts instruction adapts itself to the core philosophies of these teachings. These ideals require great patience, insight and acceptance of others.

Author Doug Cook writes of a Korean proverb that when translated states, “Peace within the individual brings peace within the family; peace in the family brings peace in the community; peace in the community, peace in the country and peace throughout the world.” The concept of “right action” to bring about peace in the individual is believed to spread virally through society and consequently, the world.

And yet, Consequentialism is just one of the internal philosophical roots of the martial arts. There are different types of kicks and stances, punches and blocks that form external martial arts. Likewise, there are many parts and variations to the internal martial arts.

Children who receive martial arts instruction learn the physical actions of self defense that build strength and increase flexibility. They become more confident and begin to absorb the philosophical ideals of good citizenship. As they learn to know the “right action” combined with this increased confidence, they become fundamentally better decision makers. It becomes apparent that defense is no longer a concern because they know how to avoid the situations that would need defending.

Suddenly, harmony around the globe doesn’t seem so far out of reach.

Different Styles of Poker Chips

by Thom Riemersma

There is a huge selection of poker chips for you to choose from. On Yahoo Shopping alone you will find 29,000 results when you look for poker chips. However there are really only 3 sorts that you need to concern yourself about. They are; clay plastic and composite. As there are advantages and disadvantages to each type so you will need to do some research before you buy. Here are some pointers for you.

Plastic

Plastic are pretty low class when it comes to poker chips. They will nto raise any stir among your poker playing friends and certainly will not support any tricks. You can get them at a cheap price from your local Wal-Mart. You can also dispose of them whenever you want.

Nevertheless they have their uses. If you are throwing a one time poker party they are ideal.

Composite

These chips are pretty cheap and will last a long time. They are easy to clean, especially if compared to clay poker chips. Whereas clay chips will only last 5-6 years maximum composite ones will last forever.

So what is the disadvantage? Well they simply do not feel like the authentic casino chips, and they do not have that beautiful clink. They are just missing something as far as poker enthusiasts are concerned.

Clay

Clay poker chips are the king of the hill as far as poker chips go. These guys are what the big boys use. When you go to Vegas and grab a stack of chips, you’re grabbing a stack of clay chips.

So what is the lure of these chips? The look and feel of them is enough to set a poker lover’s heart racing but the sound will really be the pinnacle of excitement.

However clay chips will cost you time and money. You will need to baby these beauties by washing them and oiling them every few months, to preserve them. When you really take excellent care of them they will last 5-6 years. However if you neglect them they will deteriorate fast. If you get clay chips you must take care of your investment.

Whatever type of chip you get will be determined by what you are going to use it for. Do you want authentic chips or just a one night stand. Be sure to do your research and make an educated choice.

Understanding the History of Mountain Biking

by Alison Addy

Mountain biking is really popular these days, but do you know who you have to thank for that?

When it comes to mountain biking, everybody who takes part does it for a different reason. It could be that they enjoy the leisurely rides along the countryside, it could be that they want to keep fit, or it could be that they want to take part in extreme biking. Whatever your reasons are for taking part in mountain biking, when you look back into mountain bike history, you will see that it wasn’t always as popular as it is today.

The History of Mountain Bikes

One of the main reasons why mountain biking is more popular today than it was in the 1970’s for example, is because the bikes today are designed much better than they used to be. The way they are designed now has made biking more accessible to more people. So whilst it may still have been popular back in the 1970’s, these days it is much more accessible to a wider range of people.

If you were to look at when mountain biking first started, you will notice that it was in California where a group of enthusiasts got together. They decided to try out downhill racing and that was the main type of mountain biking that was enjoyed right at the beginning. Today it is still as popular, but it is not the only type of biking enjoyed by enthusiasts these days. The tracks that were ridden along were exactly the same back then as they are today, it is only the bikes that have really changed.

The main trouble with the bikes when they were first designed, was that they were not overly sturdy. The bikes today are built to withstand practically everything that can be thrown at them. This makes them ideal for extreme biking. The frames have been made lighter, yet stronger at the same time. There are also more gears on mountain bikes today too. Riders first started to change their bikes when they wanted to adapt to downhill runs and routes. That is how the typical modern day mountain bike started out.

The bikes that were mainly on sale when mountain biking was first created, were ones that were created only for the road. So that is where they were mainly ridden. People did start to take their bikes off road, but it was not as popular. It was the enthusiasts within California which changed this and they thought about creating a bike that could handle all terrains.

So overall the main reason why you can now enjoy mountain biking off the road over all kinds of different terrain is down to those enthusiasts in California. It all started back in the 1970’s and thanks to those enthusiasts mountain biking is now more popular than ever before. An experienced cyclist or technician can approximate what bike frame size you need just by looking at your body frame

How Mountain Bike Accessories can keep you Safe

by Alison Addy

Mountain biking accessories come in all different forms and you do not need all of them.

If you are only just starting out in the world of mountain biking, then it is possible that you are currently feeling a little confused as to which accessories you need. With so many different accessories out there to purchase for mountain biking, it can often be difficult to know which ones will come in useful and which ones are better left alone.

Really you do not need every single accessory which has been brought out for mountain bikes. It all depends upon how often you use your bike and what you will be using it for. So before you purchase anything, it is a good idea to know what each of the different accessories does and whether it would be useful to you. Ideally you will want to purchase accessories which enable you to be as safe as possible so here you will find out about the best safety accessories available to purchase.

The Best Safety Accessories

If you are looking for the best safety mountain bike accessories then the first thing you need to look into is a helmet. This may sound obvious but there are some bikers who think that they do not need a helmet because mountain biking is different to ordinary biking. However, no matter which type of biking you take part in, a helmet is an essential accessory that every rider must wear. You could potentially suffer a very serious head injury if you were to fall off your bike or collide with something. So a helmet is not something that can be forgotten.

The next accessory which you may not have thought about is mountain bike gloves. Now most people wear gloves whilst they are riding because they keep the hands warm. However they do much more than that and they can in fact be a really good safety accessory. They help you to have a better grip on the handlebars which can be really helpful when you are going over rough terrain. They also provide a higher level of comfort which means that you can cycle for further without feeling the strain on your hands. Finally they can also help to cushion the hands when you fall. You always put your hands out to stop you when you fall and that can lead to nasty injuries. So wearing gloves can potentially stop these injuries from occurring.

Another important safety accessory is eye protection. The reason you need to protect your eyes whilst out riding is because bits of debris can easily fly up and land in your eye. This can hurt a lot, cause an injury to the eye and the temporary loss of vision could make you fall off your bike too. So it is obviously a very serious worry if you were to get something in your eye whilst riding.

Overall the above mentioned are the main safety accessories that you will need for mountain biking. If you protect yourself as much as possible you will be less likely to receive an injury if you were to fall off your bike. Another important accessories is the bicycle computers which can be used with aerobars and handlebar packs.

Choosing the Right Mountain Bike Wheels

by Alison Addy

Mountain bike wheels are possibly the most important part of the bike and they come with a number of different features.

Choosing the right mountain bike for you is not always as simple as it seems. There are a number of factors which you will need to take into consideration and the wheels on the bike are just one of them. There are certain features on the wheels which you will need to think about such as rims, tubeless and traction. All of these features are potentially important and if you are to benefit fully from mountain biking then you will need to ensure that you choose the right features to suit your needs.

The Different Features on the Wheels

In order to make the right choice when choosing the wheels on a mountain bike, you first need to understand what each feature does.

The rims on a bike are what the wheel is actually mounted on. There are different types of rims available and the two main materials which they are made from include aluminum and steel. The thing you need to remember with the rims is that the more expensive they are the better quality they will be.

Also you can tell a good quality rim from how many spokes it has. A poor quality rim will have more spokes than a good quality one and a good quality rim will have hidden nipples. If you are unsure as to what rim nipples are, basically they are the raised features which you will find on the rim which stick out. Their purpose is to allow the spokes to connect to the rim.

The traction is an important feature which you have to consider when purchasing new wheels. Basically the traction is what allows the wheel to grip the surface of the pavement when you are riding. So you will need to take into consideration where you will be riding your bike the most. What kind of terrain will it be? Will it be smooth or will the terrain most likely be rocky and rough? This will make a huge difference when it comes to choosing the right tire traction to suit your needs. If you choose a wheel which has hardly any traction then it would be a huge mistake to ride it over rocky surfaces.

In order to see how much traction a tire has, simply look at the wheels. Have they got a tread pattern or do they look almost naked? If a tire does look naked then that means that it hardly has any traction. The more patterns the wheel has the more traction it also has. So always keep the terrain in mind when looking at new wheels. Neuvation wheelsare perfect for any kind of challenges and it is also perfect in terms of durability.

Overall the wheels on a mountain bike are extremely important and they will make all the difference when it comes to riding and controlling the bike.
