Specialized Mountain Bikes - Making the Sport more Enjoyable

by Alison Addy

There are many types of mountain biking and downhill riding is just one of them.

Mountain biking has changed dramatically since it was first developed. These days there are various forms of the sport which you can take part in and each can be extremely challenging for your body.

Generally today if you want to take part in any type of mountain biking then you will need special skills. This is true with all forms of biking as even with ordinary biking you will still need to be perfectly fit and healthy and you will need to know what to do in the event of an emergency. However, despite it being a challenging activity, more and more people are starting to enjoy the sport and all that it has to offer.

The Most Popular Type of Mountain Biking

Whilst all forms of mountain biking are proving to be popular, downhill mountain biking does tend to have that little bit of an edge in comparison to other types. Many people compare it to downhill skiing though obviously you will be taking part on a bike and not on skis! Also with downhill mountain biking you spend a lot of your time in the air as you take part in various jumps and tricks. It can be extremely exciting and that is why so many people do choose to take part in the sport.

The thing that you need to remember about downhill mountain biking is that it can be potentially dangerous. For that reason it should never be confused with ordinary biking as if it is, beginners may end up seriously hurt. Downhill biking is also not the same thing as cross country mountain biking which it is also commonly mistaken for. Basically downhill mountain biking requires a bike with special front and rear suspension. This is because it needs to be able to handle a lot of pressure due to the varying terrains you will be riding over. The bikes themselves tend to be heavier too as they are built with stringer frames. So there is a difference between the bikes used for downhill biking and you will need to take that into account. You must consider superior protective gear like Rudy Project helmets and bicycle helmets for your safety.

Generally you do not pedal as often with downhill mountain biking as coming downhill tends to give you a lot of gravity anyway. It will require a lot of concentration though as going downhill is the most dangerous part and when you are travelling at high speeds anything could happen.

Overall downhill mountain biking is one type of specialized mountain biking which many people love. It is potentially dangerous and it does take up a lot of physical strength too. So if you are planning on taking up the sport then always ensure that you are fit enough.

Can you ever Prevent Mountain Biking Injuries?

by Alison Addy

Mountain biking injuries can easily be prevented if you follow the correct safety procedures.

As mountain biking becomes ever more popular, the number of mountain biking injuries has steadily increased. It all depends upon which type of mountain biking you take part in as to how dangerous it could be. If you take part in downhill mountain biking then obviously it will be potentially more dangerous than ordinary trail mountain biking. However, no matter which type of biking you do there are certain measures which you can take to prevent injuries from occurring. You just have to make yourself more knowledgeable about the sport.

How to Prevent Injuries

The main way to prevent mountain biking injuries is to ensure that you use the right equipment. If you are just entering into the sport then you should ideally look into the different equipment that you need.

One of the most obvious pieces of safety equipment used in mountain biking is the helmet. This is needed no matter which type of biking you take part in. Anything could happen and on mountain biking trails the terrain is usually uneven and rocky. The bike could easily catch on something causing you to lose control and if you are not wearing a helmet you could hit your head quite badly as you fall. There are a number of different helmets out there to suit you and it is always best to go into a biking store to see which helmets the staff recommends. All biking head injuries can easily be prevented if you just wear a helmet.

The opportunity to lose control of your bike is always there with mountain biking. If you are travelling along a rocky mountain trail your bike could easily lose control. Also if you are travelling at high speeds whilst taking part in downhill racing, your bike could also lose control. The only thing which you can do to prevent losing control of your bike is by being as cautious as possible. However, it is not always easy to prevent this from happening with mountain biking and so the risk is always there.

If you are going to be taking part in various mountain trails then it would be a good idea to look at the terrain before you take part. There are often things that have fallen down on part of the trail or some kind of accident could have occurred. If you do not check the trail beforehand then you could face a nasty surprise whilst you are riding and that can cause an accident. Depending on your level of fitness and cycling ability, your fitness bicycle training plans can certainly be more ambitious.

If you are a beginner then the best advice to prevent mountain biking injuries is to stick to beginner trails. So many people try and take part in trails which are far too difficult for them. So stick to a trail which you know you can do and do not try to show off in front of your friends. Overall so many accidents could be prevented if people were realistic about their mountain biking abilities.

Why Downhill Mountain Biking is Ideal for the Specialized Stumpju

by Alison Addy

Downhill mountain biking is extremely popular but it can also be extremely dangerous too.

When you look into the sport of mountain biking, you soon realize that there are quite a few different variations involved. From relaxing scenic mountain trails to challenging cross-country riding and to the more extreme downhill racing; all are popular with thousands of people worldwide. Downhill biking in particular is proving to be popular and there have been many people who have chosen to specialize purely in downhill biking.

Why Downhill Mountain Biking?

The main reason why most people choose to take part in downhill mountain biking is because it really gets the adrenaline pumping. You go at extreme speeds downhill and you also take part in various tricks and jumps too. It is certainly not a sport for the beginner and the chance of having an accident is extremely high. Whilst you may not pedal as much in downhill biking, due to the high speeds involved, when you do pedal it makes the sport even more dangerous. The reasons why downhill bikers choose to pedal even though it may seem that they don’t need to, is to gain an advantage over their opponents.

There are two things which could happen in downhill mountain biking. The first is that you race against an opponent and the second is that you race against time. When you choose to enter races where you race an opponent, it is known as a dual slalom. You set off at the same time as your opponent and you have to race them to the bottom to the finish line. When you race against time you usually take part in the same course twice at least. You see which one is your best time out of the two races and from that you see whether you have qualified to the next round.

No matter which type of downhill racing you do take part in, you should always wear protective gear. This helps to protect you in case you do fall off the bike. However as downhill mountain biking is a potential danger to the whole body, it is not possible to protect every single part of yourself. So there is always the risk of injury even if you have got the right protection on. Lazer helmetsare one of the best helmets ever made.

Overall as long as you wear the right protection you will have a lesser risk of hurting yourself. However you can never fully guarantee that you won’t get hurt and that is why downhill biking is such an extreme and dangerous sport to take part in.

Mountain Bike Maintenance - Taking Care of your Bike

by Alison Addy

Looking after your mountain bike is essential if you want to keep it in top condition. By looking after your bike, it will look after you.

Mountain biking can be a really demanding sport. However, as demanding as it is on the body, it is also extremely demanding on your bike too. Not many bikers stop to think about how the rough terrain and the constant jumps and tricks involved with downhill mountain biking can actually affect their bikes. If you do not maintain and look after your bike then it will at some point, give up on you.

What Mountain Bike Maintenance Involves

Even if you do not plan on doing any fancy tricks on your bike, the weather can still play a big part in causing potential damage. Extreme conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain and severe heat can cause the bike to become rusty and the heat can damage the tires. If your bike does start to rust then it will affect the performance of the bike and it can be extremely difficult to treat too. So in order to stop the weather from damaging the bike you will need to keep it in a cool, dry place.

Another thing you should do is tuning the bike. This should be done every week and it involves basically just checking over everything. Look at the wheels, the nuts and bolts and basically all of the smaller parts of the bike. It is possible for them to become loose and so if they do come loose they will need tightening up to prevent an accident.

The seat of the bike is what keeps you the most comfortable and so you should also make sure that it receives proper maintenance too. Ideally you should have a protected seat, especially when it is raining outside. This will ensure that the rain does not get to the seat as it will soak it through, you will not be able to sit on it for a while and it can potentially ruin it too.

Overall mountain bike maintenance can really help you to keep your bike in tip-top condition and prevent you from having to replace it anytime soon. The handlebars are one of the most important parts of a bicycle. Carbon bicycle handlebarsare the most strongest and lost lasting. Just looking at it every week should be enough as that way you can spot any potential problems as they arise. Obviously the more that you use your bike the more regularly you should check it over. By keeping your bike well maintained it will last you for many years to come. As they can be quite expensive to purchase in the first place, the longer you can maintain the condition of the bike, the better.
